You're engaged! I am so happy for you! And you’re choosing to elope? Yes, please!

An elopement used to mean running away secretly to tie the knot without anyone knowing, but times have definitely changed! Now, eloping encompasses intimate weddings, destination “I-do’s,” and micro-weddings that focus on the couple’s love story rather than a big event. Think just the two of you, a breathtaking backdrop, your love, and maybe a handful of your favorite people.

And if you’re now wondering how to make it happen - how to actually elope in Texas - I’ll help you figure it all out in this blog!

Why Elope?

Well, where do I start? Eloping is fun, romantic, and so intimate! It is often more cost-effective and less stressful when it comes to all the planning! You don’t have to worry about a huge guest list, extravagant decor, or pleasing everyone else.

You get to focus on what truly matters - the love between you two!

So, How to Elope in Texas?

Here are some of my top tips to help you plan your dream Texas elopement!

Know the legal requirements

You’ll need a marriage license and an officiant. You can get a marriage license at any county clerk’s office! There is a 72-hour waiting period; your license is good for 89 days from the date it is issued and expires if it hasn’t been used before the 90th day. You can check all the legalities here!

Choose your date

Texas has a warm climate, and the best season depends on your chosen location. I’ve found that spring and fall months are a safe bet for most locations to avoid big heat and hurricanes if you’re eloping in the coastal regions.

Choose your location

Texas is diverse, offering beaches, forests, mountains, deserts, and urban scenes. Research locations and consider what suits your personal style best. Do you want an urban elopement in a city like Austin or a remote desert elopement in West Texas? Your location will also influence the best time of year to elope.

Consider booking a beautiful Airbnb or a boutique hotel for your stay near your chosen elopement destination, especially if you’re not staying local. You can find some real gems that would also make for beautiful locations to take getting-ready photos!

Plan some activities

One of the best parts about elopement is that you can go and enjoy some adventures together! Book a fun couples activity, or go on a hike somewhere, to celebrate your marriage!

Pick your vendors

Even if you’re choosing not to have a traditional wedding, you may want to hire people to help you plan and create the perfect Texas elopement! Find a local photographer (Hi, that's me!), choose an officiant, and consider whether you want a florist, a musician, or someone to help you get ready (like a hair and make-up squad!).
